Tips for DMV  service center customers

Division of Motor Vehicles service centers by county

DMV customer service centers accept cash or checks only. Credit cards are accepted for online  transactions.

Not all services are available at every DMV service center. Please check the service center listing to ensure the service you need is available.

All DMV service centers and DMV phone centers will be closed the following days:

  • 2009: January 1, January 19, February 16, May 25, August 7, September 4, September 7, October 12, November 26-27, December 24-25, December 31.
  • 2010: January 1, January 15, January 18, February 15, March 5, April 2, May 28, May 31, July 2, July 5, September 3, September 6, October 11, November 25-26, December 24-25, December 31.
  • 2011: January 1, January 14, January 17, May 30, July 4, September 5, November 24, December 24, December 26, December 31.

Madison Westgate (renewal center) will be closed July 4 and November 28 (in addition to the dates above.)

Written exams for Class D (regular license) and Class M (motorcycle license) take about 45 minutes to complete. Please allow enough time to complete exams prior to when the service center is scheduled to close.

Road tests:

  • Appointments fill up quickly. The system indicates "no appointments available" when all appointments are filled.  New appointments are added throughout the week so you may want to visit the Web site often.
  • Road tests are sometimes scheduled outside of normal business hours.
  • If you are a new resident of Wisconsin or do not have a Social Security number, you will need to go to a DMV service center to start the application process.  Applications received on or after April 1, 2007 must include satisfactory proof of U.S. citizenship or legal presence in the country.
