Information about WisDOT’s oversize/overweight (OSOW) automated issuance system

OSOW allows customers to apply for/self-issue new single trip and new multiple trip permits on line, without contacting the Oversize/Overweight Permit Unit. It also lets you renew (self-issue) your existing multiple trip permits and transfer vehicles on the most common multiple trip permit types. Payment of permit fees is required at time of purchase via credit card. A $5 service fee will be charged per transaction.

OSOW's current system capabilities allow customers to:

  • Self-issue multiple trip permit type AA (miscellaneous equipment), RF (fruits, vegetables, raw forest products at 90,000 lbs) and RS (raw forest products at 98,000 lbs on at least 6 axles only).
  • Renew (self-issue) multiple trip permit types AA, RF and RS.
  • Transfer (self-issue) AA, RF or RS permits to new trucks (no fee)
  • Review a route for a multiple trip permit type AA
  • Amend existing permits
  • Apply for single trip permits
  • Self issue single trip permits at or below these dimensions: 125' long, 12’ wide, 13’ 6" high and 120,000 lbs.
  • View and print issued permits
  • View your company’s permit history
  • Maintain account information

What you need to use the OSOW automated issuance system

In order to use this system you must have the following:

  • You must have an established Permit Customer account with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, OSOW Permit Unit. If you do not have one or do not know if you have one, you may contact the OSOW permit unit at (608) 266-7320 to set up your account.
  • You will then need to set up electronic security for your account (in the form of a Wisconsin User ID and password) via the online State of Wisconsin Web Access Management System (WAMS). Your Wisconsin user ID is the "key" to several Wisconsin electronic business applications, including OSOW.
  • Follow the below instructions to setup and activate your (WAMS) account.
  1. Log on to WAMS and click on "self-registration."
  2. Complete the initial registration page.
  3. You will immediately receive an e-mail link for you to complete the second part of the registration. You must complete the second part within 48-hours or you will have to start the whole registration process over. When you complete step 3, you will receive a congratulatory e-mail message. You are not done yet. Go on to step 4.
  4. E-mail the following information attention: Ed or Kendra.
    1. Company name/or individual’s name if not incorporated
