72-hour trip permits

Wisconsin’s 72-hour trip permits authorize one round-trip into and out of Wisconsin, beyond the reciprocity zones between our border states, within 72 hours. The reciprocity zones vary between International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and International Registration Plan (IRP) and differ with each border state. If you need more information about reciprocity zones, please contact the Motor Carrier Unit at (608) 266-9900.

Only applicants wishing to move vehicles into Wisconsin that are not registered in Wisconsin nor enrolled into either IRP or IFTA are eligible for 72-hour trip permits. Applicants who want to move unregistered vehicles within or out of Wisconsin are not eligible. The 72-hour trip permit may not be purchased to authorize movement of unregistered vehicles for trips beginning in Wisconsin.

US Department of Transportation exempt "for hire" carriers must have Wisconsin authority and insurance on file prior to obtaining a trip permit. Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) regulated carriers must have insurance filed with their base state and a valid Single State Registration receipt showing that Wisconsin fees have been paid.

Most applicants buy both registration and fuel, but the temporary registration and the in-lieu-of fuel tax portions may be purchased separately. At present, the state fee for each part is $15.00 for a total of $30.00 plus a $5.00 service fee.
