Social Security Number required for commercial driver license (CDL)

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) require customers applying for a commercial driver license (CDL) product to include their Social Security Number (SSN) on the application. In turn, DMV must forward the Social Security Number to the commercial driver license information system (CDLIS).

All customers applying for an Original Commercial Instruction Permit (CDLI) or Original Commercial Driver License (CDL) are required to list a Social Security Number on their application. In addition, the customer needs to bring in their social security card as proof the number belongs to them before the department can issue the permit or license.

All drivers holding a commercial driver license (CDL) who did not provide a Social Security Number prior to June 28, 2004, received a letter from the department. The letter gave the CDL holder 30 days to provide proof of their Social Security Number or their CDL privileges were cancelled.
