Restricted registration credentials

Vehicles that display restricted registration credentials issued by International Registration Plan (IRP) jurisdictions such as farm vehicles, for example, may operate interstate in IRP jurisdictions without carrying additional registration credentials as set forth in Article I, Section 108 of the IRP. Reciprocity is subject to the declarations and agreements of the jurisdictions involved.

The International Registration Plan defines a “Restricted Plate” as one that has time (less than a registration year), geographic area mileage or commodity restrictions. The types of restricted plates that are issued by Wisconsin are:

  • "Special UX"—Special mobile equipment
  • "Special X"
  • "School"—School bus 
  • "Dealer" 
  • “Dairy supplies and product”—Regular Wisconsin base plates are issued, but registrants also have to display restricted use stickers on the plates. 
  • "Demonstrator" 
  • "Transporter"
  • "Raw forest products"—Regular Wisconsin base plates are issued, but registrants also have to display restricted use stickers on the plates. 
  • "Farm truck tractor"—Regular Wisconsin base plates are issued, but registrants also have to display restricted use stickers on the plates. 
  • "Farm trailer" 
  • "Special Z"
