Non operation of a vehicle

If your vehicle has been out of operation for at least one full license period you can not renew your license plate online. You may renew the expired license plate by submitting form MV2111 PDF (320 KB) Non Operation of Vehicle Statement. By using form MV2111, you will be able to keep the same license plate number. You will also avoid paying registration fees for the time the vehicle was out of use.

Your vehicle has been out of operation for one full license period if it has not been operated since the day the last license plate on the vehicle expired:

  • Twelve months if the vehicle was previously licensed annually
  • One or more full quarters if the vehicle was previously licensed quarterly
  • One or more full months if the vehicle was licensed under the consecutive monthly registration program

If you are also applying for the vehicle title, do not use form MV2111. Instead, use form MV1 PDF (401 KB) Application for Title and Registration form, and complete section F on side 2 showing that your vehicle has been out of operation.

Complete the following sections of form MV2111:

  • First date the vehicle was out of operation
  • Last date the vehicle was out of operation
  • Vehicle identification number (located in the dashboard area of most vehicles, or on your title or registration certificate)
  • Vehicle model year
  • Vehicle make
  • Vehicle license plate number
  • Year your current plate expired
  • Your signature
  • Date you sign the form
  • Day time telephone number where we can reach you with questions

If you have questions:

  • E-mail: bur-veh-services.dmv@dot.state.wi.us
Because WisDOT may have to research your question before replying, please allow 4 business days for an e-mail response. Please do not send a second e-mail.
  • Call: (608) 266-1466

If you e-mail us about a specific vehicle, we will not be able to respond to your inquiry unless you provide us with the license plate number or the vehicle identification number.
