With nearly 30,000 items, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Library is one of the larger transportation-specific library collections in the nation.

The WisDOT Library offers timely information on many transportation disciplines including intelligent transportation systems, transit, urban planning, rail planning, harbors and waterways, aeronautics and traffic safety.  In addition, the library contains materials on computer training, affirmative action, management and leadership issues.

Databases

• Transport

  The WisDOT Library, with support from the Wisconsin Division of the Federal Highway Administration, subscribes to the Transport CD-ROM database.

  The Transport CD-ROM database abstracts research reports and journals currently found in TRIS (Transportation Research Information Services).  TRIS is the Transportation Research Board's bibliographic database on the subject of transportation research. The TRIS database contains document abstracts describing the published literature of highway research; rural, urban, and intercity transit research, highway safety research, railroad research, maritime research, and air transport research. The online version also contains resumés of unpublished research in progress in transit (from the FTA Project Directories and the Transit Cooperative Research Program) and highway research.

  Transport is produced by SilverPlatter Information, Inc. and also contains document abstracts from the following databases: International Road Research (IRRD) database produced by the 25 member nations of the Road Transport Research Program of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). IRRD includes records from the ROAD database produced by ARRB Transport Research Ltd., (formerly the Australian Road Research Board.)

  The Transport CD-ROM database is available in the WisDOT Library. The citations provided can be downloaded or printed out in a bibliographic format.

• OCLC (Online Computer Library Center)
  
  The library has an annual subscription to OCLC, the worldwide global library cooperative, which enables staff to search library locations for a particular item, place interlibrary loan requests, and perform bibliographic searchs for a complete record on a requested item.

Journals

The WisDOT Library subscribes to approximately 75 current journal titles.  In addition, the library owns over 200 other titles that have ceased publication but remained archived.  These titles cover all facets of transportation, including freight, aviation, roads and highways, pavements, traffic analysis, safety, police science, geography and demography.  Please visit our journals page to view the online version of many of our transportation periodicals.

CD-ROM Collection

The WisDOT Library maintains a variety of individual CD-ROM products from a variety of commercial and transportation agencies.  Some of the titles include:

• 1990 and 2000 Census Transportation Planning Package - a set of special tabulations of 1990 census data tailored to meet the data needs of transportation planners.
• National Personal Transportation Survey 1983 and 1990 - contains statistics from the 1983 and 1990 Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey in ASCII and SAS formats.
• Transportation Research Board (TRB) Compendium of Papers and Access Management Manual.
• Intelligent Transportation Systems: National Architecture for ITS.
• Transportation Research Records (published by the Transportation Research Board), 1995-2003.
• Light Rail: Investment for the Future
• Annual Proceedings: Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (2000 through 2003)
• Stormwater Best Management Practices in an Ultra-Urban Setting.
• A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets (AASHTO, 4th edition, 2001).
• Transportation Research Board preprints from their annual meeting, 1998-2002.
• Travel Demand Forecasting - a compilation of transportation plans, reports and data.
• United States Waterway Data - a compendium of data related to the navigable waters in the United States, including the inland waterways, off-shore waters, the Great Lakes, and the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Audio-visual materials

The WisDOT Library maintains a collection of approximately 500 videos, covering such topics as occupant protection, Intelligent Transportation Systems, workplace safety, computer training, human resources and management, and general transportation interest and history.
