If you'll be traveling this weekend, be prepared for plenty of traffic. With the Labor Day weekend upon us, traffic is expected to be especially heavy this afternoon (8/29) and again on Monday afternoon. State transportation safety officials say patience and allowing adequate travel time will help motorists navigate this traditionally busy holiday weekend. Keep in mind that law enforcement agencies are continuing their "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest" campaign through the Labor Day weekend. Officials are hoping this weekend is safer than last year when 11 people were killed over the Labor Day weekend.

Adding to traffic congestion this weekend, especially in the Milwaukee area, will be Harley-Davidson motorcycle's 105th anniversary celebration. Thousands of motorcyclists will be converging on the Milwaukee area to take part in a wide variety of entertainment. State safety officials are asking motorists to stay alert for motorcyclists, especially at intersections and when changing lanes. Motorcyclists are reminded to use appropriate protective gear, drive defensively, and always ride sober.

Labor Day weekend travelers won't have a lot of road construction to worry about. Most major highways will be clear of highway construction. All lanes in the biggest project in state history, the downtown Milwaukee Marquette Interchange, are now open. Workers on other projects will cease operations about noon today (8/29) and won't resume their work until 6 a.m. Tuesday (9/2). ***Audio cuts

Schools across Wisconsin will be opening their doors for the new semester next week. That will require a whole new level of awareness from motorists who may not be used to seeing students in school zones. Remember that depending on local ordinances, speeds in school zones are typically 15 to 20 miles per hour, and you must obey all directions from school crossing guards. Parents should also remind their children to cross only at designated crosswalks and to stop, then look both ways and wait for traffic to clear or come to a stop before crossing the street. ***Audio cuts
