71-mile maintenance project begins today in northwestern Wisconsin

Work began today on a $2.5 million contract to make improvements to roadways in Buffalo, Chippewa, Clark, Sawyer, Trempealeau, and Washburn counties.
Crews from American Asphalt are completing maintenance seal coat, asphalt repair, crack sealing, rut fill overlay, and pavement markings on 71.5 miles of roadway. The roadways include:
- 11.6 miles of WIS 88 in Buffalo County from Block Road in Czechville to County U in Gilmanton
- 9.5 miles of WIS 64 in Chippewa County between the west county line in Connorsville and WIS 40 in Bloomer
- 12.2 miles of WIS 40 in Chippewa County between the west county line in Colfax and US 53 in Bloomer
- 16.3 miles of WIS 73 in Clark County between the WIS 95 in Neillsville and the east county line in Pittsville
- 9.3 miles of US 53 in Trempealeau County between Crestwood Lane in Galesville and Kittelson Road in Blair
- 12.5 miles of US 63 from County M in Springbrook of Washburn County to WIS 27 of Hayward in Sawyer County
Construction is scheduled through October 2007. All roadways on this project will remain open to two-way controlled traffic. Flaggers and pilot vehicles will be used to control traffic through work zones during daytime lane closures.
State transportation funds will pay 100 percent of the project costs.
