Governor approves $2.7 million project at Taylor County Airport
September 4, 2007
Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle has approved a $2,739,302 project for engineering and construction to extend a runway at the Taylor County Airport, near Medford. The Governor’s action releases $71,677 in state funds to help pay for the project. Taylor County is contributing another $71,678, with the Federal Aviation Administration providing $2,595,947.
The project will extend Runway 9/27 and its crosswind runway 16/34. It will include grading, bituminous paving, lighting, marking and safety area improvements. The county has worked closely with Congressman David Obey to help secure FAA funds in the development of this project.
According to Gayle Stearn, airport development engineer with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the project is the first in a series of phased construction projects to improve safety and expand the utility of the airport.
The first phase of construction is scheduled to begin this summer and be completed in spring 2008.
Existing facilities at the Taylor County Airport include a 5,000-foot primary runway and a 4,100-foot crosswind runway that accommodate some 10,000 take-offs and landings each year.
