Governor Doyle approves $400,000 project at Sheboygan County Memorial Airport
September 4, 2007
Governor Jim Doyle has approved a $400,001 project to relocate a road at the Sheboygan County Memorial Airport. The Governor’s action releases $10,000 in state funds to realign Meadowlark Road in advance of the upcoming Runway 21 extension project.
Sheboygan County is contributing $10,001, and the Federal Aviation Administration is providing $380,000.
According to Kim Kaarto, airport engineering specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the project is part of a three-year effort to extend the airport’s existing 5,400-foot primary runway to 6,800 feet. The runway extension will be completed in phases through 2008. When completed, the project will enhance safety and operational efficiency for aircraft using the airport.
This portion of the project is scheduled to begin after Labor Day and should be completed by the end of October.
There are 134 aircraft based at the airport. The approximately 66,000 aircraft take-offs and landings at the airport each year rank it the tenth busiest airport in the state for total take-offs and landings. A benefit/cost analysis prepared for the airport revealed that every $1 invested in airport improvements results in approximately $24 in economic activity for the local area.
