WisDOT extends deadline for municipalities to file for state flood damage aids

October 5, 2007

Deadline extension provides local governments in five southwest Wisconsin counties additional time to address immediate transportation needs while seeking state flood damage assistance

In an effort to help five southwest Wisconsin counties impacted by August flooding, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is providing local governments an additional two months’ time to file state flood damage aid claims for local roads and bridges damaged during the disaster. The deadline for local officials to file claims is now December 31, 2007.

In a letter to municipal officials, WisDOT Secretary Frank Busalacchi said the deadline extension will provide local governments additional time to address immediate transportation needs without delaying the process for providing state flood damage aids. The state assistance applies to flood damages to local roads that do not qualify for federal disaster aid.

“I want to commend local officials for their outstanding efforts in coping with the August flooding,” Busalacchi said. “Municipalities face ongoing challenges to complete emergency road repairs and we hope that extending this deadline will make it easier for local governments to seek state flood damage aids.”

WisDOT’s flood damage aids program assists local governments with improving or replacing roads and roadway structures that have sustained major damage from flooding. The normal deadline for filing for state flood damage aids is 60 days following the end of an event, or October 31 st for this particular disaster. The extension to December 31, 2007 applies to the five counties (Crawford, Vernon, Richland, Sauk and La Crosse) that were declared eligible for federal disaster assistance including damage to public infrastructure as a result of flooding that occurred between August 18 and August 31, 2007 and to other counties that may be declared eligible in the future for the same event period.
