State and local officials cut the ribbon on WIS 60 project in Hartford
October 8, 2007
State and local officials joined together today to celebrate completion of the WIS 60 (Sumner Street) project at a ribbon cutting ceremony in Hartford.
This project supports Governor Jim Doyle's Grow Wisconsin initiative to invest in our state’s infrastructure. “More than just a convenience for travelers, investments like this result in more efficient traffic flow, and enhanced public safety for local residents and visitors “ said Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Secretary Frank Busalacchi. “This $2.4 million investment in the city of Hartford will pay dividends for many years to come,“ he said.
Work began in April to reconstruct 1.016 miles of WIS 60 from Pond Road to Main Street.
WIS 60 faced increasing traffic volumes and a crash rate more than 17% higher than the statewide average for comparable roads. During a typical day the highway carries over 15,000 vehicles and serves as a main connector route between the city of Harford and neighboring communities.
Specific project improvements include:
- Reconstruction of WIS 60 from a two-lane to a four-lane roadway
- Permanent traffic signals at the WIS 60 and Wacker Drive intersection
- Addition of turn lanes
- Sidewalk, median and lighting installation
The project also included reconstruction of the pavement, drainage improvements and retaining wall construction.
The ceremony recognized staff, contractors and partners. WisDOT Southeast Region Director Dewayne Johnson, and city of Hartford Mayor Scott Henke also spoke about the success of the project.
The Hartford High School band provided music and helped lead the homecoming parade that was celebrated in conjunction with the ribbon cutting.
