Governor Doyle approves $7,800,000 project at Austin Straubel International Airport
November 8, 2007
Governor Jim Doyle has approved a $7,800,000 project to reconstruct Runway 6/24 at the Austin Straubel International Airport, in Green Bay. The Governor's action releases $195,000 in state funds for the project and Brown County is contributing another $195,000. The Federal Aviation Administration is providing $7,410,000.
According to Matt Malicki, airport development engineer with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the project will replace pavement and related drainage systems that were constructed in 1972. The runway currently is rated below the serviceable level; cracked and spalled concrete can create a hazard to aviation safety.
Construction is expected to begin in October 2007 on the airport's underground sewers and drainage systems. Construction will cease for the winter months and will begin again in May 2008, with runway construction completed by November 2008.
Austin Straubel International Airport is located southwest of the city of Green Bay. It is a primary service air carrier airport, with two concrete runways, 7,700 feet and 8,200 feet in length. The airport has a modern terminal building providing passenger services to the traveling public. There are 115 aircraft based at the airport, and approximately 70,500 take-offs and landings occur each year.
