Governor Doyle approves $100,000 project at Viroqua Municipal Airport

November 8, 2007

Governor Jim Doyle has approved a $100,000 project to install an automated weather observation system (AWOS) at the Viroqua Municipal Airport. The Governor's action releases $2,500 in state funds for the project. The City of Viroqua is contributing another $2,500, and the Federal Aviation Administration is providing $95,000.

According to Craig Butler, project manager with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the project will enable the Federal Aviation Administration to publish aircraft instrument approach procedures for the airport that have lower minimums. These lower minimums will provide inbound aircraft greater access to the airport.

The project is scheduled to begin in the winter of 2007 and should be completed by the summer of 2008.

The Viroqua Municipal airport is located two miles north of the city of Viroqua in Vernon County. There are two landing surfaces at the airport: a 3,350-foot asphalt runway and a 2,500-foot turf strip. About a dozen aircraft are based at the airport and approximately 9,500 take-offs and landings occur each year.
