Wisconsin State Patrol welcomes 26 new officers

November 15, 2007

Members of the 56th Recruit Class complete training at State Patrol Academy

After 21 weeks of intense training at the Wisconsin State Patrol Academy, 26 cadets received their badges as State Patrol troopers and inspectors during a graduation ceremony at the State Capitol in Madison on Friday, Nov. 16. Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Louis B. Butler was the featured speaker at the ceremony and administered the Oath of Office to the graduates.

Recruit Class 56 began training at the Academy at Fort McCoy on June 14 with 31 cadets. The cadets who successfully completed their training have shown the mental, physical and emotional strength necessary to become a Wisconsin State Patrol officer, according to Maj. Sandra Huxtable, director of training for the State Patrol.

"Our newest officers are ready for assignments throughout the state. They have received comprehensive instruction and hands-on training in a wide-range of subjects, including traffic and criminal law, ethics, defense and arrest tactics, firearms marksmanship, emergency vehicle operations, crisis management and traffic crash investigations," Major Huxtable said. "The state requires at least 520 hours of training to earn certification as a law enforcement officer. However, our cadets received more than 800 hours of training at the State Patrol Academy."

At the graduation banquet, special awards were presented to the following new officers for their performance during recruit training:

  • Governor's Award for Outstanding Personal Achievement-Raymond Goldberg
  • Superintendent's Award for Scholastic Achievement-Benjamin Burreson
  • Program Director's Firearms Proficiency Award-Mathew Strickland
  • Assistant Training Officer's Award for Physical Fitness-Mitchell Guderski

The State Patrol is currently recruiting for a class that is scheduled to begin training in the summer of 2008 at the Academy. For more information about becoming a State Patrol officer, call (608) 267-9765 or visit online at http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/statepatrol/jobs.
