WisDOT survey and soils investigation work to begin this week in Vernon County

April 10, 2006

Survey and soil boring crews from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will begin work this week for the US 14/61 Westby-Viroqua Bypass. The work will take place along the proposed corridor between Cut Across Road (northwest of Westby) and the WIS 27/WIS 82/County T intersection (south of Viroqua).

Survey crews will be placing targets for the aerial mapping process. Work will take place at the intersection points of the proposed Westby and Viroqua bypasses and the existing US 14/61 corridor. These locations include the following:

  • Between Volden Road and Neprud Road in the Town of Coon.
  • Between Tristate Road and Smith Road in the Towns of Christiana and Viroqua.
  • Between County Y and County BB/South Asbury Road in the Town of Viroqua.
  • Between County SS and the WIS 27/WIS 82/County T intersection in the Towns of Viroqua and Franklin.

The targets, which are in the shape of an "X," are used for horizontal and vertical control for mapping and have no direct correlation to the proposed roadway centerline. They consist of paint on the roadway surface and cloth on land. The majority of target placement will be contained within public right-of-way, yet some targets will be placed on private property. If needs require a target on private property or if survey crews need to cross private property, the survey crew chief will make every effort to contact the appropriate property owner(s).

Questions regarding the survey operations may be directed to Tim Fincher at (608) 386-1517 or by e-mail at timothy.fincher@dot.state.wi.us.

Soil investigations will take place on the proposed four-lane section between Tristate Road and Springville Road. The drilling crew will be in the area to perform subsurface exploration. Information collected will help highway engineers design the foundation for the new road bed. Questions regarding the soil borings may be directed to Russell Frank at (608) 785-9047 or by e-mail at russell.frank@dot.state.wi.us.
