Governor approves $296,000 for projects at Madeline Island Airport
January 14, 2008
Governor Jim Doyle has approved $296,032 for improvement projects at the Madeline Island Airport, in La Pointe. The Governor's action releases $30,650 in state funds and the town of La Pointe is contributing $12,652. The Federal Aviation Administration is providing $252,730.
According to Gayle Stearn, airport development engineer with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the projects include design and construction engineering services for a snow removal equipment building, and engineering services to delineate wetlands, for future hangar development and expansion of the airport's apron and parking lot.
The projects are underway and should be completed by fall of 2008.
Facilities at the Madeline Island Airport include a 3,000-foot paved runway. Five single engine aircraft are based at the airport, and approximately 7,100 take-offs and landings occur at the airport each year. The airport serves as a major source of transportation between the island and the mainland whenever boat transportation is not available.
