WisDOT announces excellence in construction awards - projects in Dane, Door, Oneida, Winnebago and Waukesha counties win praise

January 30, 2008

A grading project in Door County, an asphalt paving project in Waukesha County, a concrete paving project in Dane County, a small bridge construction project in Oneida County, a large bridge project in the city of Madison, and an airport runway project at Wittman Field in Oshkosh were the winners of the annual WisDOT Construction Awards, announced during the 2008 Contractor-Engineer Conference on Wednesday, January 30.

"These projects highlight the best of the best," said Wisconsin Department of Transportation Deputy Secretary Ruben Anthony, who presented the awards. "Each of these projects contained elements that show what can be done when we look beyond the basics. These projects benefit the communities they serve structurally, functionally, and aesthetically."

The Excellence in Grading Award went to Hoffman Construction Company of Black River Falls, Wis., for its work on WIS 57 in Door County. The $5.7 million dollar, 5½-mile project is part of the four-lane expansion from Green Bay to Sturgeon Bay.

The Excellence in Asphalt Paving Award went to Payne & Dolan, Inc. of Waukesha, Wis., for its work on I-94 in Waukesha County. The $12.7 million dollar, 10.5-mile project installed more than 137-thousand tons of asphalt in two lifts running two pavers side-by-side to eliminate a cold joint along the edge of the lanes and shoulders providing an excellent surface for the traveling public.

The Excellence in Concrete Paving Award was given to Trierweiler Construction & Supply Company, Inc. of Marshfield, Wis., for its work on I-39/90/94 in Dane County. The $15 million, 4.2-mile project incorporated WisDOT's first Performance-Related Specification for concrete pavement. Some 300,000 square yards of concrete pavement were placed as part of the project.

The Excellence in Small Structures Award was presented to Lunda Construction Company, Inc. of Black River Falls, Wis., for its work on the Tomahawk River Bridge and approaches in Oneida County. The 52-foot long bridge in the town of Little Rice serves as the gateway to the DNR's acclaimed Willow Flowage Recreation Area.

The Excellence in Large Structures Award was given to Zenith Tech, Inc. of Waukesha, Wis., for its work on the Yahara River Bridge in Madison. The $3.1 million structure serves as a centerpiece in Madison with a three-span, prairie-style structure that enhances the beauty of both the roadway and the river.

And the Outstanding Airport Construction Award went to La Londe Contractors of Milwaukee for its efforts in paving the 150-foot wide by 4,650-foot long runway at Wittman Field in Oshkosh in six passes, averaging nearly 300 cubic yards of concrete per hour for each 12-hour paving day. This runway is used extensively during the EAA-Airventure Fly-in so extra care and attention was required for the landscaping on the $3.8 million project.
