WisDOT announces weight limits for North Central Region highways

March 12, 2008

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) North Central Region today announced the seasonal posting of weight limits on area state highways. The weight restrictions are six tons gross load for single axle vehicles and 10 tons gross load for tandem axle vehicles (any two axles under eight feet apart). The maximum gross weight is 24 tons.

Seasonal weight restrictions will be effective 8 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2008 on the following highways:

  • WIS 107, Lincoln County, Mathew’s Road to Lincoln County S
  • WIS 107, Lincoln County, Marathon County line to WIS 64
  • WIS 153, Marathon County, Marathon County J to Shawano County M
  • WIS 54, Wood County, Jackson County line to WIS 80 and south intersection of WIS 80 to just west of WIS 73
  • WIS 173, Wood County, north intersection with WIS 80 to intersection with Wood County G
  • WIS 107, Marathon County, Marathon County A to the Lincoln County line

Seasonal weight restrictions are placed on specific highways during the spring thaw period.  The restrictions are added to routes that have poor foundations, with the goal of preventing pavement damage from legal-weight loads.  In the event of unpredicted cold weather, the postings in each county may be delayed as conditions require and will become effective at the discretion of the State Highway Engineer.

Craig Smits, regional operations supervisor from WisDOT’s Wisconsin Rapids office, said most truck drivers comply with the weight restrictions, “They have a stake in good roads and, like us, do not want to see the routes damaged.”
