Construction to begin March 17 on West Avenue in the City of La Crosse

March 12, 2008

Road will be closed during Stage 1 of construction

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Southwest Regional Office in La Crosse is announcing that work is will begin on Monday, March 17, 2008 on West Avenue in La Crosse.

The project will be constructed by the use of construction staging, temporary pavement and marking. The project has four main stages and several sub-stages to complete the work.

Stage 1: Green Bay Street to Jackson Street
West Avenue (WIS 35) between Green Bay and Jackson Street (WIS 33) will be closed to traffic during the first stage of the project and be reopened on May 31, 2008. Traffic will be detoured onto South Avenue to 3rd and 4th Streets to Jackson Street. There will be no access to West Avenue from the side streets. The work will include replacement of existing deteriorating pavement, curb and gutter, handicap ramps and water laterals. Intersection improvements include new traffic signals at Green Bay Street along with a raised median with a left turn bay, as well as a new traffic signal at the Jackson Street intersection.

Stages 2 - 4: Jackson Street to La Crosse Street
Traffic on West Avenue (WIS 35) will be open to two-way traffic between Jackson Street (WIS 33) and La Crosse Street (WIS 16). The signalized intersections of Jackson, Market, Cass and Main Streets may be closed for short durations during construction.

The following intersections with West Avenue will be closed to traffic during construction: Mississippi, Winnebago, Ferry, Division, Madison, Cameron, King, Vine, Pine and Badger.

Stage 2: Traffic will utilize the eastern existing two lanes of West Avenue so the west side of West Avenue can be constructed. Left turn bays will be provided at Jackson, Market (northbound only), Cass and Main Streets.

Stage 3: Traffic will be placed on the two newly constructed lanes of West Avenue so that the east side can be constructed. Left turn bays will be provided at Jackson, Market (northbound only), Cass and Main Streets.

Stage 4: Traffic will be placed on the outside lanes in each direction of West Avenue so that the median area can be constructed. Left turn bays will be provided at Jackson, Market (northbound only), Cass and Main Streets.

The five intersections will be constructed in sub-stages by use of construction staging and/or intersection closures. The closures are restricted from 12 hours up to five calendar days.

The project is scheduled for completion by November 1, 2008.
