Travel advisory: Heavy snow forecast - take it slow or don't go
March 21, 2008
With forecasts of up to a foot or more of snow, driving is discouraged
Weather forecasters are projecting up to a foot or more of snow in the southern third of Wisconsin today. The Wisconsin State Patrol is advising motorists that they travel only if necessary until road conditions improve. County snowplow crews are out throughout the region salting and plowing, but because of the intensity of the snowstorm, travel is discouraged.
The latest weather reports indicate the heaviest band of wet, heavy snow will fall along the I-39, I-90 and I-94 corridors.
While travel is not advised until the storm passes, if you must travel, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation recommends that you let someone know your travel route and itinerary. Drive carefully and defensively. Watch for ice patches on bridges and overpasses. Leave plenty of space between vehicles. Take note of your odometer and coordinate it with exit numbers, mileposts, or crossroads, so if you are in a crash or slide off the road, you'll be better able to identify where you are and summon help. Take a cell phone, snacks and water with you. Monitor weather forecasts on local radio stations.
The storm is expected to exit the state late this afternoon or this evening and travel conditions are expected to improve after that. Nevertheless, watch for ice patches and remember: If there's ice and snow, take it slow.
