North Central Region road construction update
August 15, 2008
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is providing a weekly update on road
construction in North Central Wisconsin, which includes the counties of Adams, Florence,
Forest, Green Lake, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage,
Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara, and Wood.
Construction-related traffic impacts are subject to change and are dependent on favorable
weather conditions.
Adams County
WIS 13
Location: Adams County O to County D
Schedule: April 21 - September 8, 2008
Cost: $2.7 million
Description: Crews will resurface County O to Kings Way and widen the section between Kings
Way and County D section to provide for a median and turning lanes.
Traffic impact: WIS 13 will remain open to through traffic during construction. Each lane
will have a 9-foot width restriction.
Florence County
No state construction projects currently in progress.
Forest County
US 8
Location: Intersection of US 8 and Everybody’s Road
Schedule: July 21 - October 31, 2008
Cost: $1.08 million
Description: Crews are reconstructing Everybody’s Road and relocating its intersection with
US 8.
Traffic impact: Crews are currently working off alignment. Construction vehicles will be
crossing US 8 between Bear Road and Everybody’s Road. Motorists can expect to encounter flagging
operations.
Green Lake County
No state construction projects currently in progress.
Iron County
No state construction projects currently in progress.
Langlade County
No state construction projects currently in progress.
Lincoln County
US 8
Location: Prentice to Bradley
Schedule: August 11 - mid-September 2008
Cost: $1.8 million
Description: Crews will resurface the pavement and replace existing guardrails.
Traffic impact: US 8 will remain open to traffic during construction. Motorists can expect to
encounter flagging operations and single lane restrictions during daylight hours.
US 51
Location: Marathon County line to County K
Schedule: July 28, 2008 - June 2009
Cost: $9.1 million
Description: Crews will resurface the highway. Crews will also overlay the exit/entrance
ramps at County Q, WIS 64, and County K. An anti-skid surface treatment will be applied on the five
US 51 northbound bridges and the five US 51 southbound bridges within the project limits.
Traffic impact: US 51 will remain open to traffic during construction. Traffic is reduced to
one lane in each direction from 6 a.m. Mondays until Fridays at noon from the Marathon County line
to approximately a mile and a half south of the county line. The lane restrictions are in place so
crews can construct a crossover.
Marathon County
WIS 153
Location: Mosinee high and low bridges
Schedule: July 21, 2008 - late July 2010
Cost: $10.4 million
Description: Crews will widen both structures and construct a multi-use path.
Traffic impact: Each lane is restricted to 10 feet. Motorists can expect to encounter lane
closures and flagging operations weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. until 5:30 a.m.
Some lane closures may also be necessary on Saturdays before 10 a.m.
WIS 34
Location: Elm Lane to I-39/US 51
Schedule: July 7 - late August 29, 2008
Cost: $2.2 million
Description: Crews will resurface the highway.
Traffic impact: Motorists can expect to encounter single lane restrictions and flagging
operations during daylight hours.
Business 51, located in the villages of Rothschild, Schofield and Weston
Location: Between Everest Drive and Drott Avenue and the North Rothschild WIS 29 interchange
ramps
Schedule: June - late October 2008
Cost: $3.7 million
Description: Project improvements include replacing pavement, curb and gutter, storm sewer,
median curbs, streetlights, and signals. The project also includes pavement replacement on the
North Rothschild WIS 29 eastbound off ramp and the westbound on ramp.
Traffic impact: Business 51 is reduced to one lane in each direction from Everest Drive to
Drott Street. All side streets on the east side of Business 51 - between Everest Drive and
Schofield Avenue - are closed, with the exception of Volkmann Avenue. All side streets between
Metro Drive and Drott Street have right in/right out access. The ramps for the WIS 29 and Business
51 interchange are closed until late October. Traffic is detoured to Exit 173 at Camp Phillips Road
and Schofield Avenue.
I-39/US 51
Location: Kowalski Road overpass
Schedule: May 5 - October 27, 2008
Cost: $3.9 million
Description: Reconstruction of the Kowalski Road overpass and approaches.
Traffic impact: Kowalski Road - between old Highway 51 and Kronenwetter Drive - is closed
until September 3, 2008. No signed detour will be provided. Access for emergency vehicles will be
maintained at all times. Motorists on I-39 can expect to encounter lane closures.
Stewart Avenue, located in the city of Wausau
Location: South 48th Avenue to Terrace Court
Schedule: April 14 - November 2008
Cost: $3.2 million
Description: Reconstruction of Stewart Avenue
Traffic impact: Stewart Avenue will remain open to two-way traffic. Motorists may encounter
intermittent flagging operations. Stettin Drive - between Stewart Avenue and 44th Avenue - is
closed to through traffic until early September. No signed detour will be provided.
WIS 13
Location: Linden Street to Pine Street, located in the city of Abbotsford
Schedule: May 5 - October 31, 2008
Cost: $2.5 million
Description: Crews will reconstruct the highway.
Traffic impact: WIS 13 is open to through traffic. All WIS 13 traffic is directed
to the two new northbound lanes. Motorists can expect to encounter flagging operations and a
10-foot width restriction. Business 29 - between North First Street and Fifth Street - is
restricted to one lane in each direction. Motorists can expect to encounter flagging operations on
Business 29 on Tuesday, August 12.
US 51/WIS 29
Location: Marathon County NN to the US 51/Bridge Street interchange
Schedule: July 2008 - September 2010
Cost: $53 million
Description: Crews are reconstructing and widening US 51/WIS 29. Related work includes:
construction of new high-speed ramps; upgrades to the Sherman Street and WIS 52 interchanges; and
improvements to Sherman Street, Stewart Avenue, and 28th Avenue.
Traffic impacts:
- Construction vehicles are merging with traffic on the northbound County NN on ramp, the Sherman Street ramps, and the WIS 52 ramps. Motorists are advised to drive with caution.
- The US 51/WIS 29, Sherman Street off ramp will be closed from 4 a.m. until 8 a.m. on Tuesday,
August 19. - Motorists can expect to encounter intermittent lane closures of WIS 52/WIS 29 under the US 51 freeway weekdays from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Marquette County
WIS 23
Location: County M to 8th Drive
Schedule: June 30 - late August 28, 2008
Cost: $1.5 million
Description: Crews will reconstruct a small section of WIS 23 between County M and 8th Drive.
Crews will also construct a new bridge over Ox Creek and a new cattle pass under WIS 23.
Traffic impact: Motorists can expect to encounter flagging operations and delays at the
intersection of WIS 23 and County M. WIS 23 is closed to traffic from County M to 9th Avenue.
Motorists will be detoured via I-39/US 51, WIS 21, and WIS 22.
Menominee County
No state construction projects currently in progress.
Oneida County
WIS 17
Location: North Birchwood Drive to North Stevens Street, north of the city of
Rhinelander
Schedule: August 11 - September 19, 2008
Cost: $540,000
Description: Crews will add curb, gutter, and storm sewers.
Traffic impact: Southbound WIS 17 will be reduced to one lane from North Birchwood Drive to
Stevens Street for the duration of the project. Northbound WIS 17 will be reduced to one lane from
Stevens Street to North Birchwood Drive from Friday, August 15 at noon. Motorists can expect
to encounter flagging operations.
US 45
Location: Three Lakes to the north Oneida County line
Schedule: August 11 - early September 2008
Cost: $892,000
Description: Crews will resurface the highway, construct new shoulders, and replace a culvert
pipe.
Traffic impact: Motorists can expect to encounter flagging operations during daylight
hours.
US 8
Location: Prentice to Bradley
Schedule: August 11 - early mid-September 2008
Cost: $1.8 million
Description: Crews will resurface the pavement and replace existing guardrails.
Traffic impact: US 8 will remain open to traffic during construction. Motorists can expect to
encounter flagging operations and single lane restrictions during daylight hours.
WIS 17
Location: South Oneida County line to Rhinelander
Schedule: July 21 - mid-September 2008
Description: Crews will replace a culvert.
Traffic impact: All WIS 17 traffic is shifted to the northbound lane. Motorists will
encounter temporary signals and a 12-foot lane width restriction.
US 51
Location: Oneida County N to Jackson Heights Road
Schedule: April 14 - September 2008
Cost: $4 million
Description: Crews will resurface the highway and construct northbound and southbound passing
lanes.
Traffic impact: The speed limit on US 51 – between County N and County D – is reduced to 45
mph. Each lane is restricted to 12 feet. Motorists will encounter flagging operations and stopped
traffic between County N and County D.
Portage County
WIS 34
Location: Elm Lane to I-39/US 51
Schedule: July 7 - late August 29, 2008
Cost: $2.2 million
Description: Crews will resurface the highway.
Traffic impact: Motorists can expect to encounter single lane restrictions and flagging
operations during daylight hours.
I-39/US 51/North Business 51
interchange, Stevens Point
Schedule: May 27 - late October 2008
Cost: $2.5 million
Description: Crews will raise and repair the interchange bridge to meet current design and
safety standards. Improvements also include replacing the pavement on the northbound and southbound
ramps and the addition of a deceleration lane to the I-39/US 51 northbound off-ramp, allowing
motorists a safer transition from the freeway.
Traffic impact: The I-39 northbound exit and entrance ramps are closed until August 29, 2008.
During the ramp closures, traffic will be detoured via I-39, US 10, and Business 51. Motorists can
expect to encounter lane closures on I-39.
US 10
Location: Long Road to River Road
Schedule: September 25, 2007 - late June 2009
Length: 4.5 miles
Cost: $19.8 million
Description: Crews will construct new US 10 from the new Wisconsin River bridges to Long Road
and will include construction of a diamond interchange at WIS 34 north. Marsh Road and Maple Road
will be closed during construction.
Traffic impact: Crews are reconstructing WIS 34 between existing US 10 and Oak Hill Road. WIS
34 is restricted to one lane in each direction with 12-foot lane width restrictions. WIS 34
northbound and southbound lanes will reopen to traffic by Friday, August 29, 2008. Motorists on WIS
34 should be prepared for lane switches and can expect to encounter flagging operations.
US 10
Location: River Road to I-39/US 51
Schedule: July 23, 2007 - late June 2009
Length: 3 miles
Cost: $11.5 million
Description: Crews will construct a new US 10 west interchange with I-39/US 51.
Traffic impact: All I-39/US 51/County X interchange ramps are permanently closed. County X -
between North Second Drive and Scenic Drive - is closed and will reopen as an overpass only in
November 2008. Motorists can expect to encounter lane closures along I-39. Pinewood Drive access
has been removed.
US 10
Location: Portage County E to Pinewood Drive
Schedule: September 18, 2006 - August 29, 2008
Cost: $23.4 million
Description: Construction includes a new US 10 four-lane divided highway and a new bridge
over the Wisconsin River. A boat landing will be built on River Road, west of the Wisconsin River.
Traffic impact: No impact to traffic on US 10.

US 8
Location: Oak Dale Road to Hay Creek Road, west of Catawba
Schedule: August 11 - September 19, 2008
Cost: $540,000
Description: Crews will replace several culvert pipes on US 8.
Traffic impact: Motorists can expect to encounter lane closures and flagging operations.
US 8

WIS 22
Location: River Bank Road to Spruce Road, town of Belle Plaine
Schedule: June 12 - early September 2008
Description: Replacement of the Embarrass River bridge
Traffic impact: WIS 22 - between WIS 156 and WIS 29 - is closed to traffic and detoured via
WIS 156, County K, and WIS 29. WIS 22 will remain open to local traffic throughout
construction.
US 45
Location: WIS 29 to the north Shawano County line
Schedule: July 7 - late October 2008
Cost: $6 million
Description: Project improvements include pavement and culvert pipe replacement.
Traffic impact: Motorists can expect to encounter lane closures and daytime flagging
operations.
Vilas County
WIS 47
Location: Mishonagon Creek bridge, between Woodruff and Lac Du Flambeau
Schedule: week of August 18 - late October 2008
Cost: $1.1 million
Description: Crews will replace the steel culverts with a single span concrete bridge slab.
Crews will also adjust the bridge and roadway alignment to improve sight distance.
Traffic impact: WIS 47 will remain open to traffic during construction. The roadway will be
reduced to one lane with temporary traffic signals. Each lane will be limited to 11 feet.
Waupaca County
WIS 22
Location: Portage County line to US 10
Schedule: July 15 - late August 18, 2008
Cost: $1.2 million
Description: Crews will resurface the highway.
Traffic impact: WIS 22 will remain open to traffic during construction. Motorists can expect
to encounter daytime lane closures and flagging operations.
WIS 22
Location: WIS 156 to Lake Wagner Road
Schedule: July 14 - late August 28, 2008
Length: 4.4 miles
Description: Crews will resurface the highway.
Traffic impact: WIS 22 will be closed to through traffic during construction. Traffic will be
detoured via WIS 156, Shawano County K, and WIS 29.
WIS 22/54
Location: Between Godfrey Drive and Royalton Street, city of Waupaca
Schedule: May 5 - September 4, 2008
Length: 0.36 miles
Cost: $1.2 million
Description: Crews will construct a roundabout and complete the connection of the new Waupaca
bypass to existing WIS 22/54.
Traffic impact: Existing WIS 22/54 will remain open to one lane of traffic at all times.
Motorists can expect to encounter flagging operations and 11-foot lane width restrictions.
Motorists can also expect to encounter intermittent lane closures between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday
through Saturday.
WIS 22/54
Location: US 10 to WIS 22/54
Schedule: September 24, 2007 - September 16, 2008
Length: 1.2 miles
Cost: $3.5 million
Description: Crews will construct an eastside bypass of the city of Waupaca from the County A
interchange north to WIS 22/54, west of the CN Railroad overpass.
Traffic impact: Crews are building the bypass off alignment. Existing WIS 22/54 will remain
open to traffic during construction. The new bypass is currently scheduled to open to traffic on
Thursday, September 4. Motorists may encounter some minor traffic impacts after the road is
opened.
Waushara County
I-39/US 51 southbound
Location: WIS 21 to County O
Schedule: August 19 - August 21, 2008
Description: Crews will make improvements to the centerline on southbound I-39/US 51.
Traffic impact: Motorists can expect to encounter daytime lane closures.
Wood County
US 10
Location: Yellow River Bridge (west of WIS 13 near Wood County B)
Schedule: April 28 - September 28, 2008
Cost: $1.6 million
Description: Crews will replace the Yellow River Bridge.
Traffic impact: During construction, US 10 will be detoured via WIS 73 and WIS 13. The
intersection with County B south will be completely closed. The County B north intersection is
closed to through traffic, but remains open to local traffic.
Motorists should slow down, use caution and stay alert when driving through construction zones. To avoid delays, consider taking an alternative route and avoid peak travel periods. Before leaving home, check the following sources for information about work zones and detours:
