Governor Jim Doyle approves US 51 improvements
July 2, 2008
As part of his “Grow Wisconsin” initiative to invest in Wisconsin’s infrastructure and stimulate our state’s economy, Governor Jim Doyle recently signed a $9.1 million contract to improve US 51 between the Marathon County line and Lincoln County K.
Construction is scheduled to begin July 28, 2008.
American Asphalt is the prime contractor for the project. Crews will overlay the highway’s existing concrete with asphalt pavement. Crews will also overlay the exit/entrance ramps at County Q, WIS 64, and County K. An anti-skid surface treatment will be applied on the five US 51 northbound bridges and the five US 51 southbound bridges within the project limits.
Construction is scheduled for completion by late June 2009, according to Michael Wendt, WisDOT Project Manager.
During construction, crews will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction.
Eighty percent of the project will be paid with federal transportation funds; the remaining 20 percent will be paid with state transportation funds
