Wisconsin State Patrol's 57th recruit class to begin training

Cadets hail from Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois

Thirty-two recruits will begin an intense 21 week training program at the Wisconsin State Patrol Academy at Fort McCoy on Sunday, July 20, that will culminate in their swearing-in as Wisconsin State Patrol officers at a graduation ceremony on Dec. 12.

The new officers will then serve as either troopers or inspectors in one of five regions around the state. Troopers generally patrol highways to enforce traffic safety and criminal laws while inspectors are responsible for enforcement of motor carrier (large trucks and buses) safety laws.

According to State Patrol Superintendent David Collins, members of the 57th Recruit Class, who range in age from 20 to 38, will receive comprehensive training in array of law enforcement subjects, including firearms proficiency, defensive and arrest tactics, emergency vehicle operations and police pursuits. They also will receive training in communication skills, crash investigations, criminal and traffic law, as well as emergency lifesaving techniques.

"The caliber of cadets in the 57th Recruit Class is excellent," Collins said. "When they successfully complete their training and earn their State Patrol badge, they'll be well prepared to meet Wisconsin's traffic and public safety needs."
