Local governments receive share of fuel tax, registration fees

Governor Jim Doyle has announced that quarterly checks totaling $103.25 million for General Transportation Aids, Connecting Highway Aids, and Expressway Policing Aids have been conveyed to Wisconsin units of local government.

The October payments from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) include $100,017,700 in General Transportation Aids to 1,923 units of government; $3.2 million to 121 municipalities for Connecting Highway Aids; and $272,700 to Milwaukee County for Expressway Policing Aids.  A breakdown of the payments by locality can be seen in an Excel spreadsheet.  ( 269 KB)

This year, local governments will share an estimated $414 million from the state transportation fund to build and maintain local roads and bridges, and in Expressway Policing Aids that support the Milwaukee County Sheriff Department's patrol of Milwaukee expressways. Quarterly payments for 2008 are being sent the first Monday in January, April, July, and October.

General Transportation Aids help defray the costs of constructing, maintaining, and operating roads and streets under local jurisdiction. Connecting Highway Aids reimburse municipalities for maintenance and traffic control of certain state highways within municipalities.

Communities also receive state transportation fund revenues for public transit, elderly and disabled transportation, and airport and harbor development from WisDOT. State and federal funds will also be allocated for specific highway and bridge construction projects.
