September 2, 2008
Daniel J. Slick, a Wisconsin State Patrol commercial motor vehicle inspector based at the Northwest
Region-Spooner Post, won the Grand Champion Award at the 2008 North American Inspectors
Championship (NAIC) held in Houston, Texas, August 18-24.
Fifty-four commercial motor vehicle inspectors from the United States, Canada and Mexico
competed in the NAIC. They were evaluated in seven categories, and Inspector Slick amassed the
highest cumulative score to earn the Grand Champion title as the best overall commercial motor
vehicle inspector. He also took first place in the Hazardous Materials/Transportation of Dangerous
Goods and Cargo category and finished second in the Standard Level I Inspection category.
Inspector Slick, a resident of Superior, has been a member of the Wisconsin State Patrol for
21 years.
"Inspector Slick's performance during this intense competition exemplifies his knowledge,
experience and training in ensuring large trucks are operating safely on our roadways," said
Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent David Collins. "This prestigious award reflects well on him
and his fellow commercial motor vehicle inspectors in the State Patrol."
The annual NAIC was sponsored by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the
Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. The event was held in conjunction with the American Trucking
Association's National Truck Driving Championship.
