Public meeting Apr. 22 for US 18 in Waukesha County

April 10, 2009

Meeting to present plans to resurface the highway and add safety improvements including driveway closures and median modifications

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WISDOT) Southeast Region in Waukesha is preparing plans to resurface US Highway 18 (Moreland Boulevard and Bluemound Road) between Manhattan Drive in the city of Waukesha and 124th Street in the village of Elm Grove.

As part of the pavement resurfacing, numerous safety and operation improvements are recommended. Noteworthy improvements include the closing of several driveways, adjusting local street connections, improving intersections, modifying medians and reconfiguring turn lanes. WisDOT’s goal is to restore the pavement, reduce the likelihood of collisions and keep traffic flowing safely and efficiently along US 18. Continuous bikeway and sidewalk feasibility is also being planned.

WisDOT is seeking public input on the plans. The meeting provides the final opportunity to voice views before the team proceeds from the planning stage to the engineering phase of the project and final plans are developed. Construction is slated to begin on the eastern segment in 2011, the center segment in 2012, and the western segment in 2013.

The public meeting is scheduled from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Apr. 22, 2009 at Swanson Elementary School Cafeteria, 305 North Calhoun Road, Brookfield, Wisconsin. This meeting will be conducted in an informal open house format with large scale and detailed displays illustrating  proposed improvements. Representatives from WisDOT will be available to discuss the plan options and to address questions and concerns. The public is encouraged to attend the meeting, provide input, and ask questions concerning this project.

If you are unable to attend the meeting, or would like more information, contact project manager Bruce Barnes at (262) 548-5892. Plans will also be available on the project Web site.

Written comments regarding the project can be mailed to Bruce Barnes, WisDOT, PO Box 798, Waukesha, WI 53187-0798.  Citizens who are hearing-impaired and who require an interpreter may request one by contacting Bruce Barnes at least three working days prior to the meeting via the Wisconsin Telecommunications Relay system (dialing 711).
