Governor Doyle approves $381,000 for projects at Austin Straubel International Airport

May 20, 2009

Governor Jim Doyle has approved several projects totaling $381,000 at the Austin Straubel International Airport, in Green Bay. The Governor's action releases $304,800 in state funds to complete the projects and Brown County is contributing the remaining $76,200.

According to Matt Malicki, airport development engineer with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, two projects involve engineering services to replace a section of the airport's primary runway, reconstruct a parallel taxiway and two connecting taxiways, and repair a damaged culvert that runs underneath the airport's primary runway.

Another project will conduct a concept budget report and complete an environmental assessment for a proposed air rescue and firefighting building. The new building is proposed to be more centrally located on the airfield to provide quicker response times to any airport incidents requiring firefighting assistance.

The projects are scheduled to begin in April 2009 and should be completed by October 2009.

Austin Straubel International Airport is located southwest of the city of Green Bay. It is a primary service air carrier airport, with two concrete runways, 7,700 feet and 8,200 feet in length. The airport has a modern terminal building providing passenger services to the traveling public. There are 115 aircraft based at the airport, and approximately 70,500 take-offs and landings occur each year.
