Public meeting June 9 for US 10 in Portage and Wood counties

May 28, 2009

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is conducting a public information meeting regarding the US 10 expansion project in Portage and Wood counties between Marshfield and Stevens Point.

The meeting is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the cafeteria of Auburndale Elementary School, 10564 School Avenue, Auburndale. The meeting will follow an open house format. No formal presentations are scheduled.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss current construction projects and the status of the remaining design projects. WisDOT project design, construction and real estate staff will be available to answer questions.

Information regarding the name changes to several Portage and Wood counties highways following the opening of the new US 10 alignment - between WIS 34 north and I-39 - in July 2009 will also be available.

After the opening of the new US 10 alignment, the following changes will go into effect:

  • Existing US 10 - from I-39 to existing Portage County P - will become new WIS 66 within the city of Stevens Point and the village of Park Ridge. WIS 66 will also run concurrent with I-39/US 51 from the I-39/US 51/US 10 east interchange to the I-39/US 51/WIS 66 interchange.
  • Existing US 10 - from existing Portage County P to WIS 34 north - will become Portage County HH within the city of Stevens Point and the town of Linwood.
  • Existing Wood/Portage County P - from existing US 10 (West Clark Street) to WIS 34 - will become new WIS 66 within the city of Stevens Point and towns of Linwood and Rudolph.
  • Existing WIS 66 - from I-39/US 51 to existing US 10 (Main Street) - will become a local street (Stanley and Michigan Streets) within the city of Stevens Point and the town of Hull.

WisDOT is expanding 31 miles of US 10 between WIS 13 near Marshfield to I-39/US 51 at Stevens Point. The new four-lane highway will bypass the communities of Auburndale, Blenker, Milladore and Junction City. The project will also remove US 10 from downtown Stevens Point west of I-39/US 51.

The project represents an estimated $244 million investment in central Wisconsin's transportation system. Construction began in 2006 and is scheduled for completion in 2012.
