Governor Doyle approves nearly $16 million for I-43 in Sheboygan County

July 1, 2009

Project advanced through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

As part of national efforts to create jobs and provide immediate economic benefits to Wisconsin and the country, Governor Jim Doyle has signed a $15.98 million contract to improve 29 miles of I-43 between the Sheboygan south county line and WIS 42 and one and a half miles of WIS 23 from one half mile west of I-43 to one quarter mile east of Taylor Drive in Sheboygan County. The project was advanced using funds provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“Wisconsin is helping to lead the way to economic recovery by putting people to work quickly on projects that improve the state’s transportation infrastructure,” Governor Doyle said.

Northeast Asphalt of Greenville, WI is the prime contractor of the project. Construction includes bridge deck repairs, pavement repairs and resurfacing, and the upgrading of beam guard. This work will be taking place at various locations throughout the project, improving the riding surface and increasing the life of the pavement and bridge decks.

Construction on the northbound lanes of I-43 is scheduled to begin Thursday, July 2 and continue through November. Work will begin on the southbound lanes next spring. The WIS 23 work will take place during 2009 and 2010.

The entire project is scheduled for completion by July 16, 2010.

During construction, both I-43 and WIS 23 will remain open to traffic with lane closures and occasional overnight ramp closures. Motorists are reminded to use caution and remain alert when driving through this or any work zone.
