Public Reminded to Stay Off the College Avenue Bridge in Appleton
September 2, 2009
Appleton bridge is still under construction and not a safe place to visit
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region in Green Bay is reminding the public that the College Avenue Bridge in Appleton is closed. It is a construction site and is currently not safe for the public to access anywhere at any time.
Michael Berg, WisDOT NE Regional Director said, “We can understand and appreciate the public’s interest in this major structure that we are building. But right now, we cannot allow public access to the site. It is a construction site and as such, a dangerous place for people to be.”
WisDOT has erected barricades, fencing and no trespassing signs warning that the area is closed. Additionally, the department has had discussions with the Appleton Police Department (APD) regarding enforcement and stepped up patrols in the area of the bridge. According to the APD, the fine for trespassing is $200.50. In recent weeks as the bridge nears completion, people have been spotted trespassing in the construction site.
Berg added, “This is going to be a beautiful bridge when we finish building it. All we are asking is that people wait another couple of months and then they can safely enjoy the bridge when we open it. Until then, please stay safe by staying off of it and let the workers complete their tasks.”
