Construction to Start on US 41, Lake Butte des Morts Causeway Wednesday, Sept. 9

US 41 southbound lane and shoulder closures
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) NE region in Green Bay is announcing that work is tentatively scheduled to begin Wednesday, Sept. 9 on US 41 southbound lanes on the Lake Butte des Morts Causeway in Winnebago County. The work will cause a number of off-peak, nighttime lane closures and extended shoulder closures on US 41 southbound from Westwind Road to WIS 21. The US 41 southbound off-ramp shoulder to WIS 21 will also close at times during construction, temporarily forcing truck traffic to be detoured.
Project cost is estimated at $15.3 million and involves widening the Lake Butte des Morts Causeway and the southbound US 41 off-ramp at WIS 21. A new overpass for Lake Butte des Morts Drive over US 41 is included, as well as the reconstruction of Lake Butte des Morts Drive and Marine Drive.
Work scheduled to begin Sept. includes the following closures:
- US 41 southbound - between Westwind Road and WIS 21 - left (passing) lane from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for widening of inside shoulder.
- US 41 southbound - between Westwind Road and WIS 21 - various lanes from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for installation of barrier wall.
Work scheduled to begin later in September includes the following closures:
- US 41 southbound off-ramp to WIS 21 - right shoulder of the off-ramp to allow for ramp widening. The closure will require truck detour for traffic headed to WIS 21 westbound for three days. The detour will be US 41 southbound to WIS 44 eastbound to US 41 northbound back to WIS 21.
- WIS 21 westbound - right shoulder at the US 41 southbound off-ramp for ramp widening.
- US 41 southbound - between Westwind Road and WIS 21 - left and right lane width reduced to 11 feet and left and right shoulder reductions.
- Marine Drive - closed to through traffic (open to businesses).
Motorists are advised to use caution and remain alert when driving through this or any work zone.
About the project
WisDOT is initiating expansion and improvement of two segments of US 41 totaling 31 miles. The project will include road expansion to accommodate traffic volume, improved interchanges and expansion of the Lake Butte des Morts Causeway. The project, beginning in summer 2009, will improve safety and ease congestion for travelers. Current construction information and details about the project can be found at the WisDOT web site or US41Wisconsin.gov.
