Governor Doyle approves $2,294,422 project at Madeline Island Airport
September 15, 2009
Governor Jim Doyle has approved a $2,294,422 project for planning, design and construction services at the Madeline Island Airport in La Pointe. The Governor’s action releases $216,960 in state funds to reconstruct Runway 4/22, Taxiway “A” and the aircraft parking ramp. The town of La Pointe is contributing $216,962, and the Federal Aviation Administration is providing $1,860,500.
According to Gayle Stearn, airport development engineer with the Wisconsin Department of
Transportation, construction will also include expanding the aircraft parking ramp and auto parking
lot, extending Taxiway “B,” constructing new hangar taxiways, and building service roads.
The project is scheduled to begin in July 2009 and should be completed by November 2010.
Facilities at the Madeline Island Airport include a 3,000-foot paved runway. Five
single engine aircraft are based at the airport, and approximately 8,100 take-offs and landings
occur at the airport each year. The airport serves as a major source of transportation
between the island and the mainland whenever boat transportation is not available.
