Northwest Region weekly construction update

April 21, 2014

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is providing a weekly update on construction projects in the Northwest Region, which includes the counties of Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Buffalo, Burnett, Chippewa, Clark, Douglas, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Rusk, Sawyer, St. Croix, Taylor, Trempealeau and Washburn counties.

Construction related traffic impacts are subject to change and dependent on favorable weather patterns.

Ashland County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Barron County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Bayfield County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Burnett County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Chippewa County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Clark County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Douglas County

US 2
Location: US 53 interchange to County D (Superior to Brule)
Schedule: March 4, 2013 to November 15, 2014
Cost: $11.1 million
Description: Rehabilitation
Traffic impact: US 2 will remain open to two-way traffic throughout the project.

WIS 27
Location: Rush Lake Road to County B
Schedule: March 24 to September 19, 2014
Cost: $2.0 million
Description: Grading, pavement replacement
Traffic impact: WIS 27 will have flagging operation beginning next week. When roadway grading begins, road will be open to local traffic only from Rush Lake Road to County B. The proposed detour route is following Bayfield County N eastward 6 miles to County A. Proceed north on County A for 15 miles to the intersection of US 2 (Iron River). Drive 7 miles west on US 2 to Brule.

US 2
Location: Superior – Bong Bridge and approaches
Schedule: April 7 to November 1, 2014
Cost: $18.2 million
Description: Bridge maintenance, reconstruct Wisconsin approaches (roundabout), local street work.
Traffic impact: Westbound and eastbound US 2 traffic reduced to one lane.

US 53
Location: Gordon to County M (northbound) and County M to Business 53, Solon Springs (southbound)
Schedule: April 28 to August 29, 2014
Cost: $4.8 million
Description: Pavement replacement
Traffic impact: There will be one lane of traffic in each direction beginning April 28. Lane closures are approximately 5 miles beginning south of County Y in Gordon to South Business 53 (Solon Springs Airport).

Dunn County

I-94
Location: Menomonie to Eau Claire (Eastbound Red Cedar Bridge)
Schedule: March 10 to November 12, 2014
Cost: $6.0 million
Description: Reconstructing new bridges over the Red Cedar River. Old westbound structure will be removed during construction season.
Traffic impact: I-94 will have two lanes of traffic in each direction. There will be single lane closures Mondays, 10 p.m., through Thursdays, 7 p.m.

Eau Claire County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Eau Claire/Trempealeau counties

I-94
Location: WIS 37 to US 53 (Eau Claire to Osseo)
Schedule: March 17 to October 31, 2014
Cost: $25.3 million
Description: Bridge replacement.
Traffic impact: Single lane closures from the Chippewa River Bridges to the Lowes Creek Bridges. WIS 37 ramps will also be closed. Closures will last until approximately May 22, 2014. County F under I-94 will be closed April 21 for 28 days.

WIS 93
Location: Independence
Schedule: April 2 to November 26, 2014
Cost: $6.1 million
Description: Roadway revitalization, bridge replacement
Traffic impact: WIS 93 will be closed to traffic and will use a two stage detour. Stage one will be detoured April 2 through May 31 via WIS 121 to US 53 to US 10 while work is being completed between WIS 121 and Indee Boulevard.

Jackson County

I-94
Location: WIS 95 to County F
Schedule: September 9, 2013 to November 15, 2014
Cost: $21.6 million
Description: Pavement replacement, grading, beam guard installation 
Traffic impact: I-94 will be reduced to one lane, bi-directional traffic until May 23, 2014. Eastbound WIS 95 ramps will remain closed until April 26, 6 a.m.

Pepin County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Pierce County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Polk County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Rusk County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

St. Croix County

WIS 64
Location: Stillwater to Somerset, St. Croix River to County E 
Schedule: March 10 to November 14, 2014
Cost: $4.7 million
Description: Clearing and bridge work
Traffic impact: Detour route uses County V and County E.

WIS 35
Location: Intersection with Radio Road in River Falls
Schedule: May 6, 2013 to August 1, 2014
Cost: $10.8 M
Description: Construction of a new interchange
Traffic impact: Northbound and southbound WIS 35 lane closures.

Sawyer County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Taylor County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Trempealeau County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Washburn County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Motorists should slow down, use caution and stay alert when driving through construction zones. To avoid delays, consider taking an alternative route and avoid peak travel periods. Before leaving home, dial 511 or visit Wisconsin 511 online for incident reports, lane closures, work zones, winter road conditions and roadside services.
