Governor Walker approves WIS 23 improvements in Sheboygan County

June 13, 2013

Work set to begin Monday, June 17

As part of his efforts to create jobs and make sure Wisconsin is open for business, Governor Scott Walker has approved $2.85 million to improve 1.2 miles of WIS 23 from County O to Pleasant View Road, including three intersections at County E, County O and Pleasant View Road. The intersection at County M will also be improved. Work begins Monday, June 17.

The contractor is Mashuda Contractors, Inc., Princeton, Wisconsin.

The project includes asphalt paving, signing, pavement marking and storm sewer. Left-turn lanes are being constructed in the median of WIS 23 at County E, County O and Pleasant View Road. Traffic approaching WIS 23 from a side road will only be allowed to make right turns onto WIS 23 at these locations.

County M is being constructed into a J-turn intersection. This type of intersection prevents direct crossing and left-turn movements from the side road. These side road movements are made indirectly by making a right turn, traveling about a quarter-mile on the divided main road, and then making a U-turn to proceed in the opposite direction on the main road toward the intended destination.

At the original intersection location, both left and right turns from the divided main road, as well as right turns from the side road to the main road, remain as direct turns. The J-turn does not require mainline through traffic to stop or yield.

Full closures (except for emergency vehicles) of the County O and Pleasant View intersections will begin on Monday, June 17 at 6 a.m. Both right lane and shoulder closures on WIS 23 east and westbound from WIS 67 to WIS 57 will start Monday, June 17 at 6 a.m. Left hand turns through the median on WIS 23 at these intersections will be restricted to emergency vehicles only. Traffic should use County E as a temporary alternate route.

There are currently no traffic impacts for the intersections at County E and County M. Work begins at County M on June 24. An announcement will be made when work will begin at County E.

Please note there will be no lane restrictions on WIS 23 from noon Fridays to 6 a.m. Mondays.

This project will improve safety along this stretch of road and is expected to be completed in late October.
