Speed limit changing on US 10 in Brillion, Calumet County

July 12, 2013

Change going into effect on Monday

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region is announcing a speed limit change on US 10 in the city of Brillion, Calumet County. On Monday, July 15, crews will be installing signs reducing the speed limit from 55 mph to 50 mph from County HR east to Progress Drive. The speed limit from Progress Drive east remains 35 mph.

Motorists should note the speed limit becomes effective once the signs showing the new speed limit are posted.

This change was made following requests from state and local officials asking WisDOT to review the speed limit for this section of US 10 in Brillion. WisDOT conducted a speed study in May of this year. It found that while the prevailing speed was slightly less than 54 mph, the department decided to lower it to 50 mph since the prevailing speed of the traffic met state and federal criteria to post a 50 mph regulatory speed zone.

WisDOT’s Northeast Region Director Will Dorsey commented on the change, saying, "We believe this is an effective speed limit that will promote safe vehicle operations and have high voluntary driver compliance."

Last fall, WisDOT also made safety improvements on US 10 in Brillion including:

  • Raised center median with curb and channelized turn lanes at busier turning locations
  • Center turn lane where turns happen less frequently
  • Widened and paved shoulders
  • High visibility traffic signs and pavement markings
