Void discovered under bridge pier
Effective immediately, the WIS 40 bridge over the Couderay River, just south of Radisson is closed due to a void that was discovered under a bridge pier.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) bridge department discovered the void or scour hole in the stream bed below the pier and determined the bridge should close to traffic.
Motorists will need to use the signed detour route until further notice. The route will take motorists on WIS 48 to County C to WIS 27/70. The bridge will remain closed until a repair strategy is determined by the department.
Details of the bridge: It is a two span pre-stressed concrete girder bridge that was constructed in 2004. The bridge was last inspected in October 2011 and no scouring was observed at that time. The bridge was scheduled to have a routine inspection this month. The WIS 40 bridge carries approximately 1,200 vehicles per day.
