Repairs to Sawyer County Bridge to begin within a week
October 8, 2013
Void discovered under bridge pier closed bridge October 1
Repairs to the WIS 40 bridge over the Couderay River, just south of Radisson are expected to begin next week after a contractor is hired to complete the emergency repairs.
The bridge has been closed since October 1 after the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) bridge department discovered a void or a scour hole in the stream bed below the pier.
WisDOT anticipates having a contractor hired by the end of this week with crews mobilizing on Monday, October 14. The repairs are expected to take a couple of weeks, with the goal of opening the bridge by November 1. Motorists will need to continue to use the signed detour route on WIS 48 to County C to WIS 27/70.
Details of the bridge: It is a two span pre-stressed concrete girder bridge that was constructed in 2004. The bridge was last inspected in October 2011 and no scouring was observed at that time. The bridge was scheduled to have a routine inspection this month. The WIS 40 bridge carries approximately 1,200 vehicles per day.
