Public meeting scheduled for US 53 Corridor in Douglas County

November 5, 2013

Meeting to focus on recommended intersection alternative and preservation of the US 2/53 and County E/Moccasin Mike Road intersection in Superior

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northwest Region in Spooner is announcing a public information meeting to discuss the next steps of the corridor preservation process for the US 2/53 and County E/Moccasin Mike Road intersection in the city of Superior in Douglas County. The meeting is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. on November 13, at the Superior Public Library, 1530 Tower Avenue, Superior. A short presentation will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Since 2011, WisDOT has held a series of local official and public involvement meetings to gather input to develop the vision for the long-term US 53 improvements from Solon Spring to Superior. The project study plans for future grade-separated intersections to preserve long-term mobility and safety of the US 53 highway corridor. Alternatives were considered for potential improvement and access changes in the area of the existing County L intersection, County B intersection, US 2 interchange, and County E/Moccasin Mike Road intersection.

Based on coordination and evaluation completed, the planning study recommends that only the intersection at US 2/53 and County E/Moccasin Mike Road continue with further evaluation at this time. WisDOT proposes to complete official mapping at the County E/Moccasin Mike Road intersection under Wisconsin Statute 84.295. No construction is planned at this time.

The public is encouraged to attend the meeting, provide input, and ask questions concerning this study. Maps of the alternatives considered at the County E/Moccasin Mike Road intersection will be on display and attendees will be given the opportunity to provide written or verbal comments. WisDOT staff will be on hand to answer questions.

If you are unable to attend the meeting and would like more information or to comment, contact Marc Bowker at (715) 635-4975. Written comments regarding the project can be mailed to Marc Bowker, WisDOT, W7102 Green Valley Road, Spooner, WI 54801. The meeting site is accessible to wheelchair. Citizens who are deaf or hard of hearing and who require an interpreter may arrange for one by contacting Marc Bowker at least three days prior to the meeting.
