Black ice issues on I-system

January 6, 2014

Motorists are being advised to reduce speeds

Blowing and drifting snow combined with the sub-zero air temperatures are creating areas of black ice on portions of the freeway system. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is advising motorists to reduce speeds. There have been multiple accidents reported since midnight.

Bridges, overpasses and ramps are all susceptible to the formation of black ice in addition to areas of the system that experience blowing and drifting of snow onto the roadway. Salting operations are less effective with the sub-zero air temperatures. It is possible that treated areas could still see the reformation of black ice.

If you are in an accident, remember to stay in your vehicle if appropriate and alert law enforcement of the incident.
