WIS 21 public involvement meeting scheduled

February 6, 2014

Public invited to attend and learn more about a proposed culvert replacement at the west branch of the White River

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WisDNR) are conducting a public involvement meeting to discuss the proposed replacement of the culvert under WIS 21 at the west branch of the White River, located in the towns of Dakota and Wautoma, Waushara County.

The meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 17 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Waushara County Courthouse, 209 S. St. Marie Street, Wautoma. A brief presentation is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. The remainder of the meeting will follow an open house format. The purpose of the meeting is to familiarize the public with the purpose and need for the project and to obtain input on the proposed improvements and traffic management strategies. Citizens who are deaf or hard of hearing and require an interpreter may request one by contacting Kristin McHugh at (715) 421-8380 or kristin.mchugh@dot.wi.gov at least three working days prior to the meeting.

The existing steel culvert pipe under WIS 21 is undersized and is set higher than the streambed, which causes water to pass through the culvert at a high velocity. The high velocity presents a barrier to the natural passage of fish, turtles, wildlife, and recreational watercraft through the culvert. WisDOT and WisDNR are working cooperatively to replace the culvert.

The project is currently scheduled for construction in summer 2015. WisDOT is currently proposing to keep WIS 21 open to traffic during construction using temporary traffic signals at the culvert. To ensure safe operations at the project location, WisDOT is planning to close County Y at WIS 21 throughout construction.
