Governor Walker approves improvement project at Major Gilbert Field Airport in La Pointe on Madeline Island

Governor Scott Walker today announced $166,667 in funding to install an Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) to provide needed weather information to pilots at the Major Gilbert Field Airport in the town of La Pointe.
Gayle Stearn, airport development engineer with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), noted that weather changes quickly due to the effect of Lake Superior. Therefore, this project will help enhance safety for pilots flying in and around the island.

- Town of La Pointe = $8,334
- Federal Aviation Administration = $150,000
The project is expected to begin in summer 2014 and should be completed by fall of 2015.
Major Gilbert Field Airport is one of 98 facilities included in the Wisconsin State Airport System Plan, which makes it eligible for state and federal funding. Airport improvement projects are administered through WisDOT’s Bureau of Aeronautics.
