Work on US 41/45 bridge in Washington County to begin

August 15, 2014

On the evening of August 18, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will begin a $4 million reconstruction project of US 41/45 at the Menomonee River Bridge in the village of Germantown, Washington County. The project includes:

  • Removing the existing roadway and bridges (both northbound and southbound)
  • Reconstructing the roadway and bridges, retaining walls, concrete barrier and high tension cable guard
  • Replacing beam guard, storm sewer and permanent signing
  • Restoring landscape

The project will be completed in four stages to allow for three lanes of traffic in each direction of the freeway during daily peak hours of travel. Although there may be temporary lane closures in the area during off-peak hours, the freeway will remain open to traffic at all times and no detour route will be necessary.

As not to interrupt this traffic flow, crews in the week of August 18 will be working at night to prepare for construction of a temporary median. Beginning the following week, operations will primarily take place during the day. Demolition of the existing bridges is scheduled to begin in September.

The existing bridges and roadway were built in 1952 and have reached the end of their service life.

The contractor, Edward Kraemer & Sons, plans on completing the project in mid-June 2015.
