US 51 south segment - McFarland to Stoughton short-term improvements

Some of the issues identified in the needs assessment can be addressed with short-term improvements. These would enhance safety and improve traffic flow, but would not include major capacity expansion.

These improvements will improve the functioning of the existing system in the interim before major infrastructure improvements are finalized and funded. A WisDOT corridor management team is working to identify and implement improvements on an ongoing basis.

  • US 51/Roby Road intersection
This intersection warrants installation of a traffic signal. WisDOT plans to install a signal when funds become available. Under state statute, there are limits on how WisDOT is permitted to fund stand-alone signal projects; there currently are no funds available for this project.
  • US 51 and County N
This intersection has been the site of numerous crashes. WisDOT is studying the crash pattern to determine if a realignment of the pavement markings can be done to provide better visibility for left turns. Pedestrian signals will be installed. The city of Stoughton will be painting crosswalks and turn arrows.
