US 51 Corridor, Dane County south segment - Stoughton to McFarland

Project location

This segment of US 51 extends 18.4 miles from I-39/90 east of the city of Stoughton to US 12/18 (Beltline) in Madison, in Dane County.

Project overview

This segment has three major components:

Needs Assessment (NA)

  • Completed in February 2004, the in-depth NA study reviewed and analyzed transportation needs along US 51 from Burma Road in the village of McFarland to the east side of the city of Stoughton.
  • An analysis of operating conditions from Stoughton to I-39/90 was also completed.

Short-term improvements

  • Some of the issues identified in the NA can potentially be addressed with short-term improvements in the corridor.
  • A Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) corridor management team is working to identify and implement improvements on an ongoing basis.

Alternatives analysis

  • Based on the findings of the NA, WisDOT has decided to proceed with an alternatives analysis that will identify and evaluate potential corridor improvements.
  • This analysis will involve development of long-term solutions to address the problems identified in the NA and completion of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

Status/phase

Study - Long term planning with no construction activity.
