Burlington bypass project

WIS 36, WIS 11, WIS 83 and WIS 142 are major thoroughfares in Racine and Walworth counties. They provide access and service to the city and town of Burlington, and the towns of Rochester, Spring Prairie and Lyons.

The 11-mile Burlington bypass project will provide a transportation system in the Burlington community that will accommodate existing and forecasted high traffic volumes. An additional 11 miles of side road reconstruction will be required for the proposed interchanges, overpasses and at-grade intersections.

The bypass will:

  • Improve safety for the traveling public.
  • Provide the best level of service to those traveling this major route.
  • Relieve delays at at-grade intersections created by increasing train traffic.
  • Provide an efficient travel pattern into and out of the city of Burlington to help reduce truck traffic in the downtown area.

Construction will occur in two phases:

  • East project - spring 2006 to fall 2008
  • West project - spring 2008 to fall 2010

This project represents an estimated $100 million investment in southeastern Wisconsin's transportation system.
