Burlington bypass project - roadway safety audit

A roadway safety audit (RSA) was conducted on the Burlington bypass project in the summer of 2006. RSA team members reviewed available background information and drawings including design criteria, project/justification reports, traffic volumes and collision data.

The analysis examined several features:

  • Road geometry
  • Sight distances
  • Clear zones
  • Drainage
  • Signing
  • Pavement marking
  • Lighting

The RSA team also considered several human factor issues:

  • Road and intersection “readability”
  • Sign location and sequencing
  • Older driver limitations
  • Driver perception of geometric features constructed to minimum standards.

The RSA team prepared an audit report, which includes a prioritized listing of safety issues that could contribute to frequency and/or severity of crashes and suggestions for improvements. WisDOT’s Southeast Region reviewed the suggestions and developed a written response to each of the issues identified in the audit report. Implementation of the accepted suggestions is currently underway.
