Burlington bypass project - Schedule

Late 2003 through 2007: Real estate activities occurred.

March 2004 through spring 2007: Final design work completed on east project.

Spring 2006 to fall 2007: Construction of the first contract of the east project began in the spring of 2006. This work consists of grading a majority of the 5.7 miles of the Burlington bypass east project. The bypass remains closed until completion of the third contract in the fall of 2008. Reconstruction of three side roads occurs as part of the first contract on the east project:

  • WIS 142 - About 0.7 miles of WIS 142 and 400 feet of Mount Tom Road is reconstructed from spring to fall of 2006. WIS 142 was reopened to traffic in the fall of 2006. Ramps connecting WIS 142 to the bypass are graded and remain closed.
  • WIS 11 - About one mile of WIS 11 was reconstructed from spring to fall of 2007. WIS 11 is reopened to traffic in the fall of 2007.
  • County A - About 0.6 miles of County A, 200 feet of Old County A and 200 feet of River Road was reconstructed from spring to fall of 2006. County A is reopened to traffic in the fall of 2006. Ramps connecting County A to the bypass are graded and remain closed.

Fall 2006 to fall 2007: Construction of the WIS 36/83/bypass interchange as well as the Fox River bridges (north) and Fox River bridges (south) began in the fall of 2006 as part of the second contract on the east project. WIS 36/83 remains open to traffic through the construction, but is reduced to one lane in each direction. Construction of the bridges and WIS 36/83/bypass interchange were completed in the fall of 2007; however, access to the bypass will remain closed until completion of the east project in fall 2008.

Fall 2007 to fall 2008: The third and final contract of the east project began in the fall of 2007 with the placement of embankments for the Brever and Ketterhagen Road overpasses. The majority of work for the third contract took place in 2008. The work will consist of paving and completion of the mainline bypass as well as the construction of the following side roads:

  • Yahnke Road – WIS 83 / Yahnke Road intersection is removed. Access to Yahnke Road will be restored via the bypass at the completion of the west project in the fall of 2010.
  • WIS 83 - About 0.5 miles was reconstructed from spring to fall of 2008. WIS 83 has access to the bypass upon completion of the east project.
  • Brever Road - About 0.4 miles will be reconstructed from fall 2007 through summer of 2008.
  • WIS 142 ramps – Ramps were paved and completed by fall of 2008. WIS 142 has access to the bypass upon completion of the east project.
  • Ketterhagen Road - About 0.4 miles was reconstructed from fall 2007 through summer of 2008.
  • County A ramps – Were paved and completed by fall of 2008. County A has access to the bypass upon completion of the east project.

Fall 2008: Burlington Bypass east project completed and open to traffic from WIS 83 to WIS 36/83.

Summer 2006 through spring 2009: Final design work completed on west project.

January 2008 to summer 2009: Construction of the first contract of the west project will began in January of 2008. Work consisted of grading 2.9 miles of the total 5.2 miles of mainline bypass on the west project. The mainline bypass was graded from 0.4 miles west of Spring Valley Road to WIS 83. Bridges were constructed over Spring Brook and the JW Peters Quarry Conveyor. The bypass remains closed until completion of the third contract in the fall of 2010. Side road work in the first of three contracts for the west project was as follows:

  • WIS 36 southeast ramp – Grading for the WIS 36 southeast ramp began in the spring of 2008 to provide access for construction. The ramp connecting WIS 36 to the bypass will remain closed until completion of the west project.
  • Spring Valley Road - About 0.4 miles of Spring Valley Road was reconstructed. Spring Valley Road re-opened to traffic by fall of 2008.
  • JW Peters Conveyor Access Road – The JW Peters Conveyor and access road was reconstructed with a lower profile to provide for two overpass structures to carry bypass traffic over the conveyor.
  • County P southwest ramp – Grading for the County P southwest ramp began in the spring of 2008 to provide access for construction. The ramp connecting County P to the bypass was closed until completion of the west project.
  • Yahnke Road - About 0.2 miles of the Yahnke Road Spur was constructed on new alignment, connecting existing Yahnke Road to the bypass. This work began in the spring of 2008 and was completed in the fall of 2008. Access to the bypass via Yahnke Road Spur was closed until completion of the west project.

Spring 2009 to summer 2010: Construction of the second contract of the west project began in the spring of 2009. This work consists of grading an additional 0.9 miles of the total 5.2 miles of mainline bypass on the west project. The mainline bypass was graded from just south of existing WIS 11 to just north of WIS 36. Bridges will be constructed over the White River. The bypass remains closed until completion of the third contract in the fall of 2010. Side road work in the second of three contracts for the west project is as follows:

  • WIS 11 - Grading for the WIS 11 on new alignment began in the spring of 2009 to provide access for construction. WIS 11 will stay open to traffic. The WIS 11 connection to the bypass will remain closed.
  • WIS 36 - About 0.9 miles of WIS 36 was reconstructed. Traffic was detoured via WIS 11 and WIS 120 during construction. WIS 36 was opened to traffic fall of 2009. Access to the bypass will remain closed until completion of the west project.
  • County P - About 0.8 miles of County P was reconstructed. In addition, 500 feet of Brookview Avenue will be constructed. Traffic will be detoured via WIS 50, WIS 83 and Market Street during construction. County P will open to traffic by late fall of 2009. Access to the bypass will remain closed until completion of the west project.

Spring 2010 to fall 2010: Construction of the third contract of the west project will begin in the spring of 2010. This work will consist of grading the remaining 1.4 miles of the total 5.2 miles of mainline bypass on the west project as well as paving its entire length. Side road work in the third of three contracts for the west project is as follows:

  • WIS 11 - Existing WIS 11 will transition to and become the Burlington bypass. Old WIS 11 will intersect the bypass near County DD. Traffic will be detoured via WIS 36 and WIS 120 during construction. Old WIS 11 will be open to traffic along with the entire bypass at the completion of the west project in the fall of 2010.
  • County DD - About 0.8 miles of County DD will be constructed on new alignment. County DD will intersect with Old WIS 11 approximately 0.5 miles east of its existing intersection with WIS 11. Existing County DD will become a cul-de-sac near its existing intersection with WIS 11. There is not planned detour of County DD. County DD will be open to traffic in the fall of 2010.
  • WIS 36 southeast ramp – WIS 36 southeast ramp will be paved and completed by fall of 2010. Access to the bypass will be open upon completion of the west project.
  • County P ramps – County P ramps will be paved and completed by fall of 2010. Access to the bypass will be open upon completion of the west project.
  • Yahnke Road - Existing Yahnke Road will become a cul-de-sac south of the bypass. Existing Yahnke Road north of the bypass to WIS 83 will be removed. Access to the bypass will be open upon completion of the west project. Access to the bypass will be provided via the Yahnke Road Spur.
