US 151 corridor - need

Improvements to the US 151 corridor are needed to reduce traffic congestion, improve traffic flow and to reduce the crash rate.

Congestion

Traffic volumes on US 151 exceed the capacity of the existing highway.

Hundreds of local streets and commercial and residential driveways have direct access to US 151 near the city of Fond du Lac, impeding safe and efficient traffic flow in the city. As traffic volumes increase, access will be more dangerous for local users and the level of service will be reduced.

Improvements to US 151 are needed now to accommodate existing and projected traffic demands.

Traffic flow

US 151 from Waupun to Fond du Lac is the last segment of US 151 to be expanded to a four-lane, divided highway between Madison and Fond du Lac. US 151 is presently a four-lane, divided facility between the WIS 49 interchange and County D in the Fond du Lac area.

In the Fond du Lac area, proposed US 151 improvements will provide a system link to US 41 that is an existing freeway facility, and to the Fond du Lac bypass/US 41 interchange south of Fond du Lac.

US 151 is a principal arterial roadway. Principal arterials are required to:

  • Provide a suitable corridor for substantial statewide or interstate travel.
  • Accommodate movements between urban areas with populations over 25,000.
  • Provide adequate access control with local service needs.
